We welcome 14 heritage cells as new content partners

Of the current 22 Flemish heritage cells, quite a number indicated interest in VIAA’s services.  Sustainable preservation of digitised collections is the most important demand. Because of this, we have focused on  these new collaborations for the past year. As a result, 14 heritage cells will now join our archiving model.

Three heritage cells joined earlier via their overarching collection management institutions MAS, STAM and Musea & Erfgoed Mechelen. The service for  the heritage cells, new content partners of VIAA , will focus mainly on the sustainable preservation of digital collections. Heritage cells are not collection management institutions, but have often invested in the digitisation of heritage collections in the past. Because of these projects and the building of local and regional heritage banks, heritage cells have digital collections at their disposal. VIAA now offers  them a solution for the sustainable preservation of these collections.

A first operational project is the digital newspaper archive of heritage cell k.ERF. This collection consists of 140.000 pages and 13 titles, managed by 5 different organisations and digitised in a project initiated by k.ERF (newspapers originating from before 1945 can be consulted on
