In 2017, Flanders chose its favourite archive footage by participating in the Image Capsule. Leading up to Heritage Day on April 22 - this year’s subject being electing - we’re sharing five selected clips from the Image Capsule 2117. This reportage from the VRT archive captures the nostalgia surrounding a day trip to the Belgian coast perfectly.
During the first sunny spring weekends, the announcements of traffic jams to the coast don’t come as a surprise. We’ve been queuing for decades to conquer our spot on the North Sea beach, for a lovely day of sunbathing, eating ice cream and shivering in the seawater. After we’ve parked the car, of course. In the sixties, this issue was simply overcome by turning a claimed piece of beach into a parking spot. Staggering, but a joy to watch.
